    Spoiler:

Damn, that was one of the creepiest things I've ever seen, and easily one of the best finales ever. S2 dragged at times, but it was more than worth it for that ending.

I love how when Twin Peaks got really, ambitiously weird, everything would move so slow. It made it all feel like I'd stopped watching a show and was being pulled into some other plane.

Now I hafta find Fire Walk With Me. Also I can finally watch the Psych parody episode!

Great post Eric. I agree absolutely. Season 2 is absolutely worth it, for the finale alone. Plus it also contains my favourite episode: "Lonely Souls".

And I hope you don't mind but I put the image in spoiler brackets, in case someone hasn't seen the finale. It felt weird editing someone else's post.

five questions for you good folks:

    1. who put the fish in the percolator?
    2. biggest disappointment from s2: the lack of "diane..." quotes or the lack of fake soap opera scenes?
    3. favorite andy moment? mine is his heroism at the end of s1.
    4. creepier version of leo: "new shoes" or swinging the sock?
    5. five favorite characters? mine are major briggs, coop, audrey horne, albert, aaaaaaaaaaand umm... i am forgetting someone important, but let's say andy.

    1. Diane put the fish in the percolator
    2. Biggest disappointment from s2: From about ep. 210-220, there were a lot of subplots which took the townspeople into different directions, didn't really go anywhere, emphasized less interesting characters, and basically wound up by the end of S2 being forgotten as characters were brought back to where they'd been before.
    3. My favorite Andy moment is probably his crying whenever somebody died.
    4. Leo swinging the sock was one of the most difficult things to watch in the whole run of the show.
    5. Favorite characters: 1. Laura; 2. Agent Cooper; 3. Bobby; 4. Sheriff Truman; 5. Audrey (but James and the log lady are in the mix).
There were a lot of wonderful actors whose stories were sometimes great and sometimes not. So with Bobby, at least he was entertaining in almost any situation. Norma was great but not a whole lot happened with her.

James is in the mix? I find that surprising, good sir! Certainly my least favourite character.

re: #2, eric, you didn't pick one of the provided options, and i had to cry for thirty minutes to get over it.

and let me jump on the "james is horrible" train. duckface is the one element of the show that continually bothered me, and the actual biggest disappointment was that interminable, pointless descent into boring that was his subplot in s2.

and i will second the bobby briggs love.

laura is an interesting choice for a favorite character. have you seen the movie by now?

Yeah, I was able to see Fire Walk With Me, albeit over two days which unfortunately broke up the incredibly intense and hallucinatory momentum sustained throughout the movie (although it also gave me a little mercy from the film's almost relentlessly bleak breaking down of Laura and of nearly every societal restraint).

It's a one-of-a-kind experience, to follow up the run of a show with an uncensored movie, made half out of love for the show's ideas and half out of spite for the network TV restrictions that killed it. Although the 3/4s or so of the film that take place in Twin Peaks retain all the tinkered-with-cliches of the show and it's characters, they're seen from a different angle, a deglamorized perspective that sheds a lot of the irony and wink wink nudge nudge for a raw nightmare world.

I think David Lynch does have some generosity and sympathy in this movie, but it's more for the actress Sheryl Lee than for Laura or what remains of Twin Peaks' ideals. Roger Ebert in his review of Blue Velvet was disappointed that Lynch abandoned Isabella Rossellini's brave, masochistic performance for a cheeky, pat ending. Twin Peaks the show carried the torch for Blue Velvet and it's cute/horrifying duality, but it found a deeper substance in standard TV tropes and the nobility in it's characters. But in the film FWWM, Lynch refuses to leave Laura Palmer until she's spent everything she has, and had her whole complicated self torn out of her her bit-by-bit in front of our eyes. I don't blame the Cannes audience for turning on the movie's seemingly exploitative cruelty. But this time I feel like Lynch wanted to give an actress he discovered and felt a kinship with in Sheryl Lee the benefit of going as far into those dark places as the two of them could muster.

The result is an amazing central performance, a rounding out of the character of Laura who I realized (as it had been teased throughout S1 and early S2) was the center of the town in every way. It also rounded out a lot of the other characters (if sadly losing a few on the cutting room floor according to Wikipedia), and it did give us a strong clue about the show's finale when
    Spoiler:
Annie appears to Laura (having seemingly gone back in time) to tell her the real Agent Cooper is trapped in the Black Lodge and to write it in her diary. Whether this happens and effects the ending or not, I don't know. But after all of the very physical and realistically portrayed cruelty of the movie, Lynch at least leaves us with a (somewhat ambiguous) grace note when the angel who had abandoned Laura appears in the Black Lodge while Cooper has his hand on her shoulder, I can only assume to rescue her and bring her to heaven.
