I watched my roommate watching this (3rd re-watch for me) and I was impressed again by how well the cast is handled. Seriously, other shows need to learn from this. When a character becomes unnecessary plot-wise or thematically, it's OK to scale back their appearances, or cut them entirely. Conversely, it's important to have your characters evolve, and not just go through the same motions each season. Seriously, I don't think any other show even comes close to the efficiency, economy, and efficacy of the way The Wire used its extended cast.

I would say Deadwood probably comes close.

Eh, I don't think so. As much as I love Deadwood, Milch really ran out of ideas for some of the characters. Tolliver, Calamity Jane, Joanie, Trixie, and the Doc all spend a good amount of time spinning their wheels.

I really didn't like the ending montage. It was... disappointing at the very least. But the first 3 seasons are all As.

How can the fourth season not be an A for you? What show were you watching?!

I've spotted your problem. Someone mixed your Wire DVDs up with season 4 of Full House.

Maybe Maestro Harrell and Jermaine Crawford were so good that they made all the other kids seems like amateurs (which I'm pretty sure they were anyway).

Those two are both pretty great, but I liked Michael and Namond quite a bit as well. Especially the relationship Namond had with his parents.
